......." Your Mum was much more than a matron to literally hundreds of boys. She was a discreet confident to many of us, me included. Her partnership with Jane Massen was, frankly, pretty exceptional. No-one talked about "pastoral care" then, but that is what it was, well ahead of its time as a concept. She was ever-present come rain or shine and especially in the summer we saw lots of each other as she took an interest in my passion for cricket............ And yes, I ate plenty of lemon cake whilst she knitted and chatted!"
